The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) Limited is incorporated under the Companies Act Cap. 46:03 of the Laws of Malawi. It’s core business is to procure, transmit and distribute electric power in Malawi as well as manage System Market Operations in Malawi. ESCOM is inviting applications from suitably qualified candidates to fill the following vacant positions currently existing under the Malawi Electricity Access Project (MEAP):

Assistant Occupational Health and Safety Officer (OSH) – Positions (3) Grade: ESB (Temporary)

Location: MEAP Project (Blantyre, Lilongwe & Mzuzu)

Duration: 6 months Supervised by: The Regional Coordinator

Purpose of the Job

The Assistant OSH Officer is responsible for implementing occupational health and safety activities in ESCOM MEAP Project to ensure that ESCOM staff under the project is safe from any hazard in the work environment.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

The Officer shall be responsible, but not limited to the following:

  • Ensuring that safety protocols are in compliance with the ESMP and other necessary regulations and guidelines at national and international levels.
  • Conducting risk assessment and enforcing preventive measures to mitigate the risks.’
  • Ensuring that equipment is working properly and inspecting machinery for defects.
  • Educating employees about safety rules and regulations, equipment usage and accident prevention techniques.
  • Performing detailed analysis of all accidents and based on findings, assist relevant managers in developing appropriate accident prevention strategies.
  • Advising managers on the necessity of hosting fire drills.
  • Ensuring that appropriate warning notice and safety posters are displayed and that these are in line with all relevant legislation and accepted safety and health standards.
  • Preparing reports on occurrences and providing statistical information to management
  • Recommending new health and safety rules and regulations or changes
  • Inspecting premises and the work of personnel to identify issues or non-conformity.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Ability to pay attention to detail

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

  • Applicants should have a minimum qualification of a Bachelor’s Degree in Public/Environmental Health from a reputable institution.
  • At least 3 years’ experience in Occupational Health and Safety (OSH) in construction projects.
  • Must have in-depth knowledge of OSH legislation and procedures in Malawi.
  • Must be able to conduct accident and incident investigation and report on the same.
