Overview

CRECCOM is a local Non-Governmental Organization that is involved in social empowerment and community mobilization on a variety of social issues in line with its vision and strategic plan which isto build self-resilient citizens responsive to the ever-changing world for the betterment of their welfare.

CRECCOM in partnership with Chemonics International is implementing aUSAID-funded activity called Next Generation Early Grade Reading Activity (NextGen) in all districts in Malawi. The Activity will solidify and build on the contributions made to date as part of the implementation of Malawi’s National Reading Program (NRP) towards improving the delivery of high-quality early primary reading instruction in all Malawian primary schools.

USAID/Malawi expects that, by the conclusion of the NextGen activity, all levels of Malawi’s Ministry of Education (MoE) will be self-sufficient in providing high-quality reading instruction in Chichewa and English to all Grade 1 and Grade 2 students, irrespective of home language, Socio-Economic Status (SES), gender, disability status, or other potentially marginalizing factor. USAID/Malawi also expects that through the activity, at least 30% of Malawian 2nd-grade children will demonstrate grade-level reading proficiency in Chichewa by 2026 as defined by the Global Proficiency Framework; and that at least 30% of NextGen’s beneficiaries will also demonstrate measurable improvements in English oral expression and in the essential sub-skills of reading in English by the end of the Activity. For students whose main means of expression is through sign language, requirements would be measured through sign-language-based assessments rather than oral assessments.

The Activity will support all grades one and two in the country, and at least one hundred and sixty schools with resource centers for learners with disabilities. In addition, NextGen will operate in a selected number of pre-primary learning environments.

CRECCOM is in this activity, leading all community mobilization activities and ensuring robust parental and community engagement in promoting early-grade reading in Malawi.
