Kusamala Institute of Agriculture and Ecology

Kusamala Institute of Agriculture and Ecology (Kusamala) is a local, non-governmental organization that promotes household-level permaculture and agro ecology systems in Malawi. Through grants and programs, Kusamala conducts outreach, research, and advocacy with the aim to show the viability of permaculture as a local and national agricultural strategy. In a country where approximately 80% of the population are subsistence farmers, Kusamala demonstrates how local resources can meet human needs while improving quality of life both for people and the environment.

We are currently seeking for a suitable Candidate to fill the following position.

Job Title: Field Officer -Zomba

The Field Officer will be responsible for the direct implementation, farmer training, and community mobilization for the project. The Field Officer will serve as the primary link between the project and the beneficiary communities, promoting sustainable farming practices, monitoring progress, and ensuring the project’s objectives are met on the ground Under the direct supervision of the Project Coordinator, Kusamala Institute of Agriculture and Ecology, the Field Officer shall perform the following specific tasks:

Duties & responsibilities

  • Lead in community mobilization and sensitization to farmers for the adoption of permaculture and sustainable farming practices

  • Lead in the facilitation of all community engagement activities including training, field and open days, meetings and field demonstrations among others

  • Providing on-going support and guidance to trained groups throughout the lifespan of the project

  • Demonstrate permaculture/agroecology/sustainable agriculture principles in all activity implementation

  • Conduct routine follow up visits to project sites to provide technical support on ongoing project interventions through lead farmers

  • Act as a liaison coordinating project partners, government extension officers and farmers involved in project implementation

  • Compile and submit fortnightly, monthly and quarterly reports

  • Document and share project impact stories for learning and decision making

  • Proven ability of project resource management

Key skills

  • Strong understanding and proven practical experience of permaculture/sustainable Agri practices

  • Excellent facilitation, communication and interpersonal skills, with fluency in local language

  • Strong innovativeness in addressing complex issues and also the ability to support farmers’ transition to adopting new practices

  • Ability to work independently in remote areas with minimum supervision

  • Ability to ride a motorcycle with a valid license

Qualifications and Experience

  • A minimum of Degree in Agriculture, Agroecology, Permaculture, Natural resource management or any other related field

  • At least 5 or more years of practical experience working in agriculture extension, community development or directly with farmers

  • Proven experience in training, facilitation and community mobilization

  • Hands-on experience with sustainable agriculture practices (organic farming, natural farming, permaculture, syntropic farming and agroecology) is highly desirable
