The newly established International Blantyre Cancer Centre – Diagnostic Unit, a subsidiary of the International Blantyre Cancer Centre, provides advanced laboratory and imaging services. LABORATORY TECHNICIAN
Job Purpose
The Laboratory Technician will play a central role in the delivery of reliable laboratory services that support cancer diagnosis, treatment monitoring, and general medical investigations. The position requires a professional who can operate modern diagnostic equipment, uphold stringent quality standards, and ensure patients and clinicians receive results that are both accurate and delivered on time.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct a wide range of laboratory investigations including haematology, biochemistry, microbiology, and molecular diagnostics.
- Perform routine and specialised tests with precision, ensuring results are accurate, validated, and reported within agreed turnaround times.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring calibration, preventive maintenance, and immediate reporting of faults for timely resolution.
- Uphold strict quality assurance and control protocols in line with international laboratory standards.
- Handle and process patient samples with the highest level of care, confidentiality, and integrity.
- Participate in internal and external quality assessment schemes, audits, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Provide technical support and guidance to junior staff and contribute to training sessions where required.
- Ensure proper documentation, record keeping, and safe storage of laboratory results and reagents.
- Collaborate closely with clinicians, nurses, and diagnostic imaging colleagues to provide integrated diagnostic services.
Qualifications & Work Experience
- Diploma or Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences from a reputable institution.
- Registration with the Medical Council of Malawi and in good professional standing.
- Minimum of 3 years’ post-qualification experience in a busy laboratory, preferably in a hospital or specialised diagnostic setting.
- Strong knowledge of laboratory quality systems, biosafety procedures, and international standards.
- Experience in oncology-related laboratory investigations will be a strong advantage.
- Proficiency in the use of modern laboratory equipment and Laboratory Information Systems (LIS).
