Overview
Neotree is a fully integrated, open-source digital health intervention combining data collection, education, and clinical decision support at the bedside. It has been developed with and for healthcare workers in low resource settings. Neotree was implemented at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) in Malawi in 2019, at Kabudula Community Hospital and Lumbadzi Health Center in 2023, at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital (SMCH) in Zimbabwe in 2018, and at Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital (CPH) in Zimbabwe in 2020. The work is led by Prof Michelle Heys (co-Principal Investigator, UK), Dr. Msandeni Chiume (co-Principal Investigator, Malawi), Dr. Simbarashe Chimhuya (co-Principal Investigator, Zimbabwe) and Sophie Sutcliffe Goodman (Executive Director, Neotree charity).
Background to the post
Duties & Responsibilities
- Support with the submission of ethics applications, amendments, and annual renewals to ethics boards in Malawi, including COMREC.
- Support with developing research protocols, including research instruments (questionnaires, topic guides, etc.).
- Oversee maintenance of site files and ensure regulatory compliance with ethical approvals, and best practice for data protection/ information governance (with support from UCL programme manager/ senior research fellows).
2. Finance
- Track and report on project expenditure against agreed budget lines liaising with GHII finance team and Neotree charity.
- Support UCL and Neotree charity to set up budgets, MOUs, and reporting mechanisms for new grants, prepare budgets for new funding applications and complete due diligence where necessary.
- Oversee payment of salaries for in-country staff and procurement of monthly supplies (data, toner, paper, etc..) for implementation sites.
3. Implementation and Research
- Oversee Neotree implementation activities at KCH, Kabudula CH, and Lumbadzi HC, including line management of Neotree Ambassadors on-site.
- Develop and manage project GANTT chart.
- Check in with Neotree ambassadors weekly, and conduct reviews of the app and hardware functionality, and data dashboard.
- Oversee and manage data requests from individuals or sites, e.g., number of admissions, discharges, etc.
- Support clinical staff in preparing materials for Monthly Clinical Updates meetings and facility based Morbidity and Mortality Meetings, using Metabase.
- Support capacity building of clinical staff in use and management of clinical data.
- Support organisation of research activities, such as arranging focus group discussions and individual interviews, liaising with research consultants, and UCL-based researchers.
- Liaise with Neotree software developers to troubleshoot technical issues and follow up on app updates
- Attend monthly tech meeting.
- Update the app with changes within the editor platform.
- Travel to all implementation sites atleast twice a month.
- Support with travel arrangements and logistics when Neotree team members visit Malawi.
- Oversight and tracking of research impact.
- Contribute to donor reporting where appropriate.
- Prepare and deliver presentations, reports, discussions, etc. as needed
7. General duties
- Support PI Dr. Msandeni Chiume with Neotree administrative tasks and stakeholder engagement (e.g., engagement with Ministry of Health) including attending relevant MoH working groups and meetings / fundraising / stakeholder meetings and events, take notes and feedback to UCL / Neotree charity and support relationship building Produce agenda and chair weekly project management calls
- Attend monthly Joint Management Group meeting and relevant grant team meetings. Feedback to UCL / Neotree charity on relevant developments and areas of concern
- Support on providing social media content and increasing Neotree’s profile in Malawi
- Supporting team with recruitment of new members (e.g., for community engagement activities)
