SECRETARY-GENERAL

BACKGROUND

The Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) was established by an Act of Parliament under Chapter 18:09 of the Laws of Malawias a lead provider of Relief and Development Services to vulnerable members of the
community across the country. It is one of the over 150 National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies world over providing Humanitarian Services and assistance to the needy and vulnerable. It is a member of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies IFRC). Its activities and operations are guided by the Geneva Conventions dating back to 1949, as well as subsequent protocols to the Conventions.

MRCS would like to fill the position of Secretary General with suitably qualified, motivated, dynamic and capable candidate to provide solidleadership in the effective and efficient delivery of its programmes.

JOB SUMMARY

The Secretary General who is the Chief Executive Officer of the Society will lead and bring an integrated team approach to the design and delivery of the Relief and Development Services provided by the Malawi Red Cross Society. She/he will be reporting to the Board, hence, expected to possess outstanding interpersonal skills.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties and responsibilities of the Secretary General shall include:

a) Coordinate and synchronize activities of Management and Board;

b) Provide direction and guidance to the Society on a range of issues,

including finance, programmes and human resources;
c) Mobilize and manage resources, including timely reporting to the Board and Partners;
d) Manage partnership relationships;
e) Recruit and manage human resources;
f) Oversee the growth of the membership of the Society and its development;
g) Maintain the register of members of the Society;
h) Ensure effective liaison and linkage with Government, especially the Malawi Government Ministry Responsible for Health and the Department of Disaster Management (DoDMA); and
i) Provide secretarial services to the Board and Council of the Society.

f) Capacity to instill confidence in the Board, staff, key stakeholders and partners;

g) Firm commitment to achieving the MRCS vision and implementing its strategic Plan;
h) Holds herself/himself to high ethical and moral standards.

QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE

The candidate must be a Malawian national of good standing in the society and should possess the following:

a) A Masters Degree in Business Administration, Strategic Management, Public Administration, or other relevant qualification;
b) At least 10 years professional experience in Relief and Development work, 5 years of which should have been at senior Management level;
c) Experience in working with cooperating partners, public sector, NGOs, and the private sector;
d) A self-starter and be able to work with minimum supervision; and
e) Computer literacy.

Persons with experience working with the Red Cross/Red Crescent movement bodies within and outside the country or with continental or global programmes in Relief and Humanitarian work will have an added advantage.

TENURE OF OFFICE

The successful candidate shall be offered a 3-year fixed contract renewable , on satisfactory performance.

REMUNERATION

MRCS shall provide the successful candidate with an attractive compensation and benefits package.
