Description

The Senior Procurement Officer – Field Crops is responsible for supporting and executing the operational and tactical procurement of agricultural commodities (mainly field crops such as maize, Sorghum, Rice etc.) from farmers, cooperatives, and aggregators, with a view to meet quality, cost, and specification requirements in line with CML Procurement procedures, ethical for developing and implementing procurement strategies.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Head of Procurement, the Senior Procurement Officer – Field Crops, will be required to carry out the following duties, among others:

  • Develop and implement sourcing strategies for targeted field crops based on sales forecasts and production plans.
  • Prequalify and register commodity suppliers (farmers, cooperatives, aggregators) following procurement procedures.
  • Prepare and issue RFX documents aligned with CML guidelines and local farming season.
  • Facilitate the disbursement of farm input in alignment with the commodity growing season.
  • Ensure adherence to procurement policies and national regulatory requirements, particularly in commodity trading.
  • Maintain up-to-date supplier databases (farmers, cooperatives, et) including price history, quality scores, and geographical location
  • Support quality audits and facilitate lab tests as needed before payment approval.
  • Verify and retain accurate documentation for traceability and compliance (e.g. farmer ID, origin, tonnage, warehouse receipts)
  • Coordinate discussions between the internal project teams and product developers.
  • Prospect and onboard new suppliers; conduct supplier visits, assessments, and capacity-building sessions
  • Monitor and report on market trends and risks, and develop mitigating strategies (e.g., drought, inflation, pest infestations)
  • Identify and engage key stakeholders who are critical to the success of the project. Such as Farmers/Producer Groups focused on maize, sorghum, and barley production; Government Agencies for support through policy, research, and extension services; NGOs and Development Partners who provide funding or technical support.
Qualifications

The ideal candidates should have, at least the following qualifications and experience:

  • Degree in Procurement and Supply Chain or Degree in Agriculture or related field.
  • Preferably, 5 years’ experience in a similar role, in an FMCG Industry.
  • Must be a member of the MIPS

Key Competencies

  • Good communication skills both oral and written.
  • Ability to negotiate favorable terms and pricing in contracts.
  • Ability to manage and sustain stakeholders’ relationships
  • Good understanding of various local languages for easy communication with small scale farmers across the country.
  • Good understanding of production schedules.
