About CAMFED

CAMFED (the Campaign for Female Education) is internationally recognized as a leader in girls’ education, for its child protection policy and practice, and as a voice for girls’ education and women’s empowerment at the highest levels. Founded in 1993, CAMFED supports girls throughout their primary and secondary school years and supports women to transition to productive and fulfilling livelihoods and onto leadership, as role models, activists, and philanthropists. CAMFED operates in Ghana, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Malawi.

CAMFED began working in Malawi in 2009, and is currently operating in all the districts, working closely with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.

We seek to recruit a qualified and experienced candidate for the following position:

JOB TITLE: SENIOR PROGRAM OFFICER- GENDER AND INCLUSION

Accountable to: Head of Programs
Hours: Full-time – 37.5hrs per week
Location: Lilongwe

Job Purpose

To lead the design and ensure the mainstreaming of gender transformative approaches across our work in Malawi and supporting within the CAMFED Consortium. The role will also provide technical assistance to support CAMFED’s strategic partnerships to develop an increased understanding of how gender equality effects project and programme outcomes and implement strategies to ensure gender integration in all CAMFED Malawi’s programmes.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Strategic Planning and technical support

  • Support and work with the Education Cluster in Malawi to implement and build capacity on Gender in Education issues for the partners.
  • Develop gender equality strategy and action plan, provide overall strategic leadership to CAMFED Malawi’s work in gender mainstreaming in line with the country’s gender priorities and strategies.

Programme Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement (QA/QI)

Provide gender technical advice, quality assurance and support for CAMFED Malawi’s team and programmes including by spending substantial amount of time in field offices and working directly with local partners.

Programme monitoring, evaluation, reporting and learning

Provide support in establishing gender related indicators, collection and analysis of gender disaggregated data and compiling lessons learned.

Capacity Building

Lead capacity development initiatives with field teams and partners, on the themes of inclusion and gender, implementation and monitoring of interventions

Networking and Partnerships

In coordination with the Engagement Director, the Senior Program Officer- Gender and Inclusion will lead strategic relationships with relevant stakeholders to ensure CAMFED Malawi is strategically positioned and contributing to gender and inclusion at sector level.

Knowledge, Experience & Skills Required
Education and Relevant experience

The Senior Program Officer- Gender and Inclusion will oversee all gender related activities and should:

  • Have minimum of a Masters’ Degree in Gender and Development, Social Science, Education, or related field from an accredited University.
  • Have demonstrated experience in gender programming and use of transformative approaches in the promotion of gender equality especially girls’ education.
  • Have knowledge in key gender related laws and policies that guide implementation of interventions to promote girls’ education.
  • Have skills in community mobilization and facilitation.
  • Have a minimum demonstrated work experience of 5 years in a related field.
  • Have knowledge and understanding of the primary education systems in Malawi.
  • Be an advocate of girls’ education.
  • Having experience working with government or NGOs will be an added advantage.

Technical/Functional Competencies

  • Ability to manage own work with little supervision.
  • Demonstrable capacity for evidence-based decision-making and sound judgment
  • Problem-solving ability, creative resourcefulness, and innovation
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English and Chichewa
  • High levels of integrity and passionate about promotion of gender equality especially girls’ rights.
  • Available for frequent travel especially hard to reach areas across the country.
  • Very strong analytical and drafting skills, the ability to meet deadlines and to produce concise, top-quality work at strategic and operational levels
  • Drive for Results – Takes personal ownership and accountability to meet deadlines and achieve agreed -upon results.
  • Teamwork (Collaboration) and Inclusion – Collaborates with other team members and contributes productively to the team’s work and output, demonstrating respect for different points of view.
