Essential Qualifications & Skills

  • Good degree

  • A good pass at English Literature and Language GCSE or equivalent

  • Good English reading and writing skills

  • Computer literacy

Desirable Qualifications & Skills

  • Teaching qualification – PGCE & QTS

  • Evidence of further education e.g. MA


Essential Experience

  • Working with students with additional learning needs in a secondary setting

Desirable Experience

  • Teaching experience in secondary setting

  • Use of SIMS

Job Description – Core Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of the Head of Learning Support assist subject teachers with promoting the learning of identified students

  • Liaise with Head of Learning Support (SENCO) to set individual targets for students

  • Liaise with other teachers and non-teaching staff to enable you to support key students

  • Assist teachers with lesson arrangements to support students with additional learning needs

  • Support subject teachers in the development of differentiated materials

  • Design and deliver one to one and small group intervention sessions

  • Engage in team teaching where appropriate

  • Cover lessons when work is set by an absent Teaching Assistant

  • Mark students work and give appropriate feedback to students in intervention groups

  • Implement interventions and record accurately

  • Attend to key students’ personal needs and provide advice to assist in students’ social, health and personal development

  • Assist with the testing of pupils e.g. reading age tests and CATs

  • Act as a scribe/reader for students who require access arrangements during exams/assessments

  • Invigilate as and when required during examinations

  • Track progress and recommend interventions for assigned key students and report this via school systems

  • Help maintain up to date records for key students and report on their progress

  • Ensure clear discipline in and out of the classroom and use the school B4L system consistently

  • Assist teachers in signing out books to students and keep records up to date. Facilitate the collection of books in line with school policy

  • Ensure photocopying and other resources are completed correctly and in time for key lessons and support groups

  • Carry out general admin duties as directed by SENDco

  • Maintain display for learning support rooms and staff room board

  • Produce and maintain resources to support learning

  • Attend and participate in regular meetings

  • Attend parents’ evenings and other community events to promote community cohesion

  • Establish constructive relationships and communicate with other agencies/professionals, in liaison with teachers, to support achievement and progress of students

  • Keep up to date with educational developments and apply this knowledge to teaching and learning

  • Ensure safeguarding training is up to date

  • Ensure a safe working environment and properly assess risk


Pastoral Responsibilities

  • Partake in team building activities, including annual residential supporting key students

  • Take part in whole school events such as swimming gala and sports day

  • Run targeted clubs to support students with additional learning needs

  • Participate in Club and House activities when directed by SENDco
